‘The big five’ safari
Duration: 5 days
hoping to see the famous big five?lions, leopards, elephants, rhino and buffalo - this package is the perfect choice for you.
If you are hoping to see all of the famous big five – lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo - then this package is the perfect choice for you.
You’ll see families of elephants in Lake Manyara and Tarangire National park, dozens of lion packs prowling across the Serengeti and buffaloes more or less everywhere, but it takes a more skilled eye to spot the rarer rhino and leopards that make up the big five. Luckily for you our guides have just that! Despite there being only 16 rhinos left in the Ngorongoro crater and with leopards hunting mostly in the middle of the night, our knowledgeable safari drivers will do all they can to show you these magnificent animals in their natural habitat. And of course there’s so many other species to encounter and enjoy on your way!
5-day itinerary
Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire National Park
After breakfast our driver will collect you and head into Arusha town for any last-minute purchases before heading off on a 2-3 hour drive to the Tarangire National park. Tarangire is well known for its huge elephant population and ancient baobab trees. It forms the centre of an annual migratory cycle that includes up to 3,000 elephants, 25,000 wildebeest and 30,000 zebras. After a morning game drive, we will stop to enjoy packed lunches and cold drinks. We’ll bring you to your accommodation in Karatu before the evening sets in, either in the park or outside of it depending on your choice of hotel. Dinner will be served at your accommodation.
Day 2: Serengeti National Park
After breakfast we hit the road, leaving the highlands behind us and descending into the heart of wild Africa – the Serengeti National Park – with its endless plains, rolling into the distance as far as the eye can see. The slightly bumpy ride is worth it as you head to the stunning Seronera area, one of the richest wildlife habitats in the park, featuring the Seronera River, which provides a valuable water source attracting herds of wildlife. Arrive in time for lunch and enjoy a stunning afternoon game drive in the Serengeti National Park, spotting lions, zebra and gnus (large antelope) In the early evening, we will let you settle in for dinner, enjoying the stunning sunsets and an early night at your accommodation in the Serengeti.
Day 3: Serengeti National Park
After breakfast we depart early in the morning for a game drive in this wonderful park, rising early to make the most of our time. Our guides know the best locations to spot an impressive pride of lions, witness the famous wildebeest migration, spot hippos bathing in muddy pools and see the stunning stripes of the local zebra herds. We journey from the wide-open plains to the kopjes: these volcanic rocky outcrops provide protection and shelter for a wide variety of animals and, from the top, you can look out across the vast grasslands. In the afternoon enjoy your packed lunch at the picnic site or go back to your accomodation for a tasty lunch followed by a relaxing evening enjoying sundown and your drink of choice.
Day 4: Ngorongoro Crater National Park
After breakfast, you’ll head to Ngorongoro, descending 600 meters into the Ngorongoro floor. Here you’ll explore over 2500 species of fauna and flora found in the crater. Black rhinos, hippos, prides of lions and much more can be seen in the richly diverse habitat of the crater. Later, enjoy your packed lunch as you keep your eyes peeled for hippos bathing in the distant pool that can be seen from our lunch spot. After enjoying your food, you will continue with the game drives and later head towards Karatu town for dinner and overnight.
Day 5: Lake Manyara Park National Park
On the final day, after breakfast we depart to Lake Manyara Park which is famous for its agile lions who you can see expertly climbing the local acacia trees. The park is also home to baboons, giraffes, elephants, hippos and much more.
