Jozani Forest is Zanzibar’s only national park and is famous for the beautiful yet endangered red colobus monkeys, which are native to Zanzibar’s forests.

The Jozani Conservation Project was created in 1995 and alongside the local communities, has successfully protected the monkeys from the threat of extinction, with over a thousand red colobus monkeys now thriving there. A percentage of your entry fee contributes to development projects and to compensate local farmers whose crops are often damaged by the red colobus monkeys.

Jozani Forest has several habitats including mangroves, swamp forest, evergreen thickets and a variety of wildlife including Syke’s monkeys, bushbabys, bush pigs, Aders's duiker (a small forest dwelling antelope), elephant shrews, chameleons. With more than 40 species of birdlife and 50 species of butterfly, a visit to the Jozani forest is enjoyable for visitors of all ages.

On our half-day tour, you will visit the red colobus monkeys and take a stroll along the Mangrove Boardwalk which entwines through coral thicket vegetation, mangrove forest and across a creek. You walk through mangrove forest and learn about how crucial it is to Zanzibar’s ecosystems, providing a habitat for lizards, snakes and birdlife as well as preventing coastal erosion.

What to expect

To begin your tour, our English- speaking driver will collect you in a private vehicle from your hotel. After a drive to the Jozani National park which is 38 km southeast from Stone Town, you will be met by a tour guide who will lead you through the national park, at a nice leisurely pace. We supply bottled water but do recommend you bring extra to keep well hydrated. Do let us know if you need to begin your tour from anywhere else on the island as the price may differ. We recommend a 10am departure from Stone town to avoid the hottest part of the day. Please wear good covered walking shoes and bring along a hat and sun cream.

Extra information
In Tanzania, a tip is expected after your participation in a tourist activity. This tip is not included in your package. If you are happy with your tour, the recommended amount for a guide is 20 USD a day, which can be divided by all your group members. As we pay a lot of attention to creating good working conditions for all our crew members and making sure they get paid according to guidelines from organizations that defend their rights, we kindly request you to respect this amount for any trip. Thank you!

Can we combine our tour?

Absolutely! When your tour ends, how about heading to Zanzibar’s spice farms for a Spice Tour, or perhaps head straight back to Stone Town for a Historical Stone Town tour.
