Maasai village and Mto Wa Mbu tour

Duration: Full day

Home to over 120 tribes from around Tanzania, Mto wa Mbu is a bustling town with a unique and wonderfully rich cultural diversity. ENJOY A FULL DAY EXPLORING MTO WA MBU AND VISITING THE MASAI TRIBE.

Our driver will collect you from your hotel in Arusha where we will then drive to Mto Wa Mbu (a 2 hour journey).

The plains and woodlands that surround Mto Wa Mbu are where you’ll find the native Maasai families who live in their traditional bomas (homesteads). Prepare to be warmly welcomed by the Maasai and witness some of their long  standing traditions like dancing, singing and intricately beaded jewellery, often worn during traditional ceremonies.

The Maasai live in villages surrounded by thorny corrals to protect their cattle at night and they will be happy to show you their homes and way of life. Cattle are everything to the Maasai, in fact they believe that they are the true owners of all the cattle in the world and you will see the warriors wandering with their cattle looking for pastures and water.

After a morning with the Maasai, you can sample the locally brewed banana beer and a delicious lunch of local dishes cooked by villagers over a wood fire stove.

From here your Mto Wa Mbu Village walking tour begins. You will visit the innovative farming practices of Mto Wa Mbu villagers and learn about the irrigation system that sustains local crops, including the 32 varieties of bananas. Take a stroll around the craft market and learn about the famous Makonde tribesmen who are skilled in the art of wood carvings. You will pass by a local youth project which supports young people in their artistic ventures, where they will be happy to show you their painting techniques.

After some optional time for buying local handicrafts, we will head to the local market where fresh fruits and vegetables are sold. While you have the chance to try out some of the fruits, your knowledgeable local guide will give you a great introduction to everyday life in Tanzania. From here your Mto wa Mbu Village tour comes to an end and we can drive you back to Arusha city. We recommend that you bring some cash, a camera, sun-cream and a hat.
