Historical Stone town tour

Duration: Half day

explore the fusion of Arabian and African cultures and Zanzibar’s history on this half day tour.

The capital of Zanzibar, Stone Town is a city of prominent historical and artistic importance in East Africa.

Through the labyrinth of lively streets, too narrow for cars to pass, you can explore the fusion of Arabian and African cultures, reflected in the 19th century architecture. Given the unique mixture of Arab, Persian, Indian and European design, Stonetown is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

As you wander around the city, your guide will take you on a historical and cultural journey through the old slave market and Anglican Church, the Old Fort, the marketplace, the Sultan’s Palace museum and the Forodhani sea-front gardens.

While the tour is half a day, we recommend that you stay in Stone Town for longer to discover many more magnificent wonders. Forodhani Gardens is definitely worth an evening visit as at night it comes alive with street food vendors grilling today’s catch and lots of local families enjoying the sunset.

Heading out into the centre of Stone Town, you can expect a nice leisurely stroll with plenty of stops to take in the architecture and history of different areas. We recommend a 9am start. Please wear comfortable walking shoes and bring along a hat, sun cream, water and some cash if you’d like to stop for some shopping on route. Out of respect for the local culture, we do ask that you cover your knees and shoulders whilst on this tour.

Extra information
